Motivating Marriages
Couples Therapy
Motivating Marriages Psychology offers internationally recognised, evidenced based therapies including Gottman Method Couples Therapy (GMCT) and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) for Couples. Adrian and Kerrie are both Certified Gottman Therapists and have completed an externship in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples.
GMCT is based on 40 years of research conducted by clinical psychologist Dr. John Gottman, of the Gottman Institute in Seattle, Washington, USA. It’s focus is on teaching couples within a clinical treatment setting, how to recognise the negative behaviours within their relationship that are causing breakdown; and to teach couples how to implement empirically researched and tested skills to address these challenges.
EFT is based on 30 years of research conducted by Dr. Sue Johnson. To flourish in our relationships we all need deep and secure emotional connection. It is painful when we are disconnected from those who matter to us. EFT is an attachment-based model of therapy that focuses on building secure bonds between couples, enhancing their wellbeing.
Our Service
We offer a personalised service that provides support and tools for you to become more intimate and connected with your partner. This process involves 3 phases, assessment, treatment and maintenance.
Assessment Phase
Relationship Wellbeing Assessment
The Relationship Wellbeing Assessment is a thorough assessment that ensures your therapist understands your particular circumstances and individual needs. It includes:
4 online questionnaires/assessments to complete at home
A 2 hour feedback and recommendation session with your psychologist
Treatment Phase
Our primary treatment modality is Intensive Marathon Therapy.
Marathon Couples therapy
Marathon Therapy is an increasing popular and effective therapy approach that consist of 2 consecutive days of couples therapy. The focus of these sessions will be assisting couples to rapidly move through their gridlocked conflict areas. This process will assist couples in healing past emotional injuries and de-escalating conflict in order that they can then begin to re-build trust, connection and intimacy in their relationship.
Maintenance Phase
Follow up Appointments
At this stage you will likely have learned new ways of approaching your relationship challenges and have ideas for how you can continue to improve. Research suggest that follow up appointments are beneficial for maintaining the gains made during treatment.
The maintenance phase appointments will be scheduled every 3 weeks, to once every few months, depending on your individual needs.

Are the challenges we are facing too severe to see a psychologist? Is it a lost cause?
We saw a couple therapist before, and it did not help. Why would this be any better?
My partner wants us to go to therapy, but I don’t think we need it. Will it be worth it?
